North America.
The term Yoruba describes
among other things, a collection of people linked
by geography, language, history, culture and
religion. The Yoruba of West Africa are located in
southwestern Nigeria, neighboring Benin,
Togo and other locations around the world.
The Yoruba are one of the three largest ethnic
groups in Nigeria, the other two being Hausa and Igbo.
In addition, they constitute among the largest
ethnic groups in Africa. The Yoruba language belongs to
the Niger-Congo branch of the great Congo-Kordofanian
families of West Africa.
The principals divisions are the Egba,
Egbado, Ekiti, Ife Ijebu, Ijesa, Lagos, Osun and Oyo,
Ile-Ife is generally considered the religious capital and
Oyo for a long time was the political and military capital
of the Great Oyo empire.
The Yoruba are a highly urbanized people that live
in large, densely populated cities.
